Wesley Housing has made the decision to transition property management services of its metropolitan Washington, DC region communities to third-party provider S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co. At the same time, Amurcon Realty Company will continue managing Wesley’s southern and central Virginia properties, as originally conceived through our merger with Virginia United Methodist Housing Development Corporation (VUMHDC) earlier this year.
These steps reflect our commitment to finding fresh solutions that strengthen communities, support residents, and ensure we can deliver on our mission well into the future. They are also a direct response to our five-year strategic plan priority to
Wesley Property Management Company, Wesley Housing’s wholly owned subsidiary, has supported residents and cared for our communities for decades, building strong relationships and meaningful connections. This transition is not about stepping back—it’s about stepping forward with more focus and purpose. By sharpening our mission around expanding the supply of affordable housing and strengthening communities through high-impact resident services, Wesley Housing can grow its portfolio, execute development projects more effectively, and increase the positive impact we have on residents and neighborhoods.
“These organizations bring deep experience managing affordable housing and share our commitment to resident-focused service and strong compliance,” said Kamilah McAfee, President and CEO of Wesley Housing. “Just as important, they value the people who make our communities thrive. We have chosen partners who respect and appreciate our staff’s experience and relationships with residents and who can offer them opportunities for continued growth and success.”
S.L. Nusbaum brings a strong Mid-Atlantic track record, managing more than 30,000 units with a proven commitment to quality operations. Amurcon has successfully managed the southern portfolio from the start, demonstrating expertise in rural markets where those communities are located. Wesley Housing will also continue existing third-party management relationships of other owned assets, including Culpepper Garden, Union on Queen, Fields of Falls Church, and Cedar Street Apartments.
We anticipate most community managers and maintenance staff will remain at their properties under the new management companies, ensuring continuity for residents and preserving valued relationships. Central office staff will receive support, including placement opportunities within Wesley Housing or with partner companies, as well as severance packages where needed.
The transition will take place in phases of four to eight properties at a time over the next 10 months and is expected to conclude next summer, positioning Wesley Housing to strengthen its long-term sustainability and continue advancing its mission of building up.
