Residents of The Waypoint will enjoy community amenities such as free Wifi, a community room, business center, access to a playground/park space, a shared courtyard plaza with the Fairlington Presbyterian Church and more. Apartments feature open floorplans, with 11% of the units being fully accessible based on requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The community is built to Energy Star® green building standards and is achieving a National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Silver Certification.
This four-story development is transit-oriented with walkable access to Alexandria transit (DASH) and Metrobus routes, which connect residents to employment and commercial centers throughout the region. The community is less than a one-minute drive to Interstate 395 entrance ramps and within a quarter mile of a shopping center that includes grocery stores, a pharmacy, banks, a post office, and a host of other retail providers.
“The City of Alexandria enthusiastically supported construction of The Waypoint since the beginning. Moderate income families, who were previously excluded from this area, will now be able to call The Waypoint home,” said City of Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. “With universal design, a substantial group of people with disabilities will be able to live here as well. Housing should be for all, and at The Waypoint, it is.”
Prior to redevelopment, the land on which the new apartment community is sited was an underutilized parking lot owned by the Fairlington Presbyterian Church (FPC). Following a collaborative visioning process with FPC and the Alexandria community, Wesley Housing and other key partners, including Harkins Builders, Heffner Architects PC, and Walter L. Phillips, have now transformed the land into a housing resource that will serve generations to come. With a total development cost of $37.2 million, The Waypoint benefited from significant financial support from the City, Virginia Housing, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, as well as from Capital One, Freddie Mac, and Hudson Housing.
“Our congregation is thrilled to be realizing our dream of turning spaces for cars into spaces for people,” said FPC Pastor Juli Wilson-Black. “We are grateful to have had a wonderful development partner in Wesley Housing, and the support of many neighbors and community members who realize the value of affordable housing for Alexandria.”
“The Waypoint is a true testament to the vision we set out to achieve with FPC and the City back in 2017,” said Wesley Housing President/CEO Shelley Murphy. “We are thrilled to finally be opening the doors to 81 families who will enjoy quality, amenity-rich, affordable apartments with access to resources that will help them build up their lives,” added Murphy.
Wesley Property Management will manage the community and Wesley Housing’s on-site resident services team will provide year-round programs and services for the individual and family households who will begin moving in next month. In addition, local nonprofit partner, Our Stomping Ground, will provide case management and supportive services to residents with developmental disabilities.
