As the holiday season invites reflection, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our partners, donors, supporters, and staff. Your generosity – through time, resources, and advocacy – has made it possible for individuals and families across our communities to have a safe, healthy, and affordable place to call home.
Housing is more than a roof overhead; it is the foundation for wellbeing, stability, and opportunity. Across our communities, too many households – including workers with low wages, older adults, people with disabilities, and single-adult caregivers – face impossible choices each month: pay rent, buy groceries, or afford needed medication. Many residents are just one crisis away from homelessness.
In response, our Resident Services team has worked tirelessly to support stability and prevent eviction. This year, we provided over 3,800 residents with the support and resources needed to help them reach their goals and improve their resilience. This includes eviction prevention services, financial literacy training, workforce development programming, education and enrichment for residents of all ages, and health and wellness offerings that foster overall wellbeing. In 2025, 110 youth residents participated in our summer enrichment program, Quest, and our Odyssey initiative engaged 104 older adults. Through Supplies for Success, more than 600 K-12 students received backpacks filled with supplies and 740 residents were supported with gifts and assistance through Holiday Help.
On the development front, we broke ground on the historic Beacon Landing Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) community and began leasing at One Hawaii, which will open in early 2026. We’re on track to deliver 1,000+ new construction units and preserve 500 additional affordable homes over the next five years (read more in the Development Beat). Your continued support will be vital as we expand to serve even more families throughout Virginia and Washington, DC.
Thank you for walking alongside us in our mission of building up our communities. I wish you a peaceful and joyful holiday season and look forward to all we will accomplish together in the new year.
Sincerely,
Kamilah McAfee
