Residents Gain Essential Tech Skills
Wesley Housing has partnered with LINXERVE Academy, an Alexandria-based IT training institute, to offer digital literacy classes that equip residents with vital tech skills for today’s world. The program recently wrapped up at Strawbridge Square Apartments and is expanding to three additional communities in Fairfax County, empowering residents to use technology more confidently in their daily lives.
Over 6-10 weeks, participants attend weekly two-hour sessions covering everything from creating email accounts and linking smartphones to using Microsoft Word for resumes and PowerPoint for presentations. These hands-on classes are designed to meet residents in the convenience of their Community Resource Centers, regardless of background or experience level, and are tailored to support older adults at The Fallstead and Coppermine Place, and job seekers at Wexford Manor and Strawbridge Square.
For many residents, these digital literacy classes are opening new opportunities–helping them build new skills, reconnect with family online, and navigate job applications and telehealth tools.
At Strawbridge Square, students capped off their class by creating and presenting PowerPoint slides that celebrated their cultural identities–from traditional places of worship and dishes in Ethiopia to cherished family recipes like homemade beef soup.
The program is funded by a Fairfax County FY25-FY26 Consolidated Community Funding Pool (CCFP) grant award.
